Are you planning a visit to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico? Then there are some important travel facts that you should be aware of:

Since Puerto Rico is US territory,
US citizens do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico from the US or vice versa. Although a driver's license should be sufficient as identification, bringing a valid passport and supporting documents is strongly recommended. For foreigners, the entry requirements are exactly the same as those for the United States. However, temporary residents (H1B, F-1 student, J-1 visas etc.) traveling to Puerto Rico directly from a US state only need a driver's license. This also means that you do not need a valid visa to travel to Puerto Rico directly from the US.

All nationals or citizens of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries who plan to travel to the United States (incl. Puerto Rico) for temporary business or vacation, will require an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea to the United States under the VWP. After arriving in Puerto Rico, which will almost always be by plane in San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín (SJU) International Airport or Rafael Hernandez Airport in Aguadilla, that also receives international flights now, the first rule for having a great time in Puerto Rico is to rent a car. We really recommend this for some obvious reasons: There are tourists who spend their vacation time in the hotel area of San Juan, where the bigger hotels try to get you into their casinos. But the truth is that the metro area does not reflect the amazing beauty of our island. The beaches there might be nice, but once you visited beaches like
Crash Boat in the west,
Luquillo or
Seven Seas in the east or
Flamenco on Culebra Island, you will agree that they are worth the trip. Since renting a car is very affordable in Puerto Rico, it will not affect your budget much. And after all, most attractions and hidden spots can only be reached by car.

You haven't seen Puerto Rico if you haven't experienced the island's top attractions that we recommend!

If you like beaches, you will simply have to visit Culebra Island, which is located a few miles east from Puerto Rico and is easily accessible from Fajardo by ferry. This takes only an hour and costs less than $5 for two people. Culebra's two main beaches
Flamenco Beach and
Zoni Turtle Beach belong to the 3 best beaches of Puerto Rico.

After having spent a few days on our beautiful beaches you might want to enjoy the tropical rain forest
El Yunque, located just 30-45 minutes from the metro area. El Yunque is an impressive place you just have to visit! The profuse vegetation makes a hike through this only tropical forest of the US National Forest system an amazing experience for persons of any age.
The maybe most amazing view on the island awaits you in the
Cueva Ventana - a cave that can be seen as a little natural wonder. While the entrance is in a forest, at the end of the cave you will find yourself near a huge opening in a wall of a mountain with a spectacular view.

The
Río Tinajas near to Ceiba is an absolute insider's tip offering lots of fun for persons of any age. Anyone who will take their time to find this river for the first time, which as many others flows from the rain forrest El Yunque into the valley, will be rewarded by breathtaking views of natural pools and slides, waterfalls and by baths in clear refreshing water.

If you are interested in culture and history you will love to see
Old San Juan. The beautifully colored colonial buildings and the massive fortress
El Morro alone are definitely worth a visit. But there are also many things to discover in the numerous nicely decorated shops lining the streets of this quarter. Here, you are very likely to find a nice souvenir worth taking home.

There are plenty of things to see in Puerto Rico, so that even in 2 or 3 weeks of vacation it will be impossible to see everything. To make sure that you can make most of your stay and can do some beforehand planning, PPR provides you with this information to ensure that your will have an amazing time on our island.
